I'm an avid Podcast listener - Fresh Air, BBC's Kermode & Mayo, Maron's WTF & anything Slate.  A new favorite is The Gist with Mike Pesca - topical, short, & sweet.  I especially liked the podcast from last week with author Stephen Dubner: "Freakonomics is Basically a Peanut Butter Cup".   To paraphrase:
  • There are chocolate people & peanut butter people, each having unique skills
  • Through collaboration they can produce desired results, eg the Freakonomics empire
  • Too much time is spent by professionals doing the work of others instead of focusing on what they do best
  • Don't spend time doing the stuff you pay others to do - specialists improve business productivity
This is a philosophy that any business should embrace. Typically small business owners are experts in their field and passionate about sharing their know-how. Most recognize that they are not marketing experts. Many simply don't have time to plan and run marketing programs.  I work with clients such as technology hotshots, teamwork gurus, fitness buffs and personal development pros. Usually they have had some success with hit or miss activities & are now looking for measurable business growth. It's awesome to see the results of growing teamwork, as we each focus on what we do best.  I love the "aha moment" when a client sees their investment pay for itself, and the resulting in business growth. I'm just not sure if I'm the peanut butter or the chocolate, but I'll continue to spread the marketing message. Now I'm off to subscribe to the Freakonomics podcast!

"...Working with Georganne, it took less then 2 hours to develop and start implementing a focused business plan. I’m thrilled that my investment paid for itself in less then a month! "

Ya had me at Peanut Butter Cups. Great post, GB. In this world of integrations and freelancing, it makes perfect sense to focus and bring in the best. Cheers!
